Using Positive Assertiveness: Stand Your Ground

In this class you learn what positive assertiveness means and why it is important to learn to use it in the workplace to be more effective.  You will learn about three basic behavior styles, how each are exhibited and how they affect the way you are perceived at work.  You will discuss how self-esteem affects your ability to be assertive and ways to change your behavior style if you want to work towards being positively assertive. Learn how to respect your own rights and other people’s rights as individuals, and make decisions for yourself while allowing other people to make their own.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS?
Any UAB employee may take this class if you are interested in learning more about how to use positive assertiveness to become more effective at work and in your personal life.

  • To understand exactly what being assertive means.
  • To evaluate how assertive we are and in what areas we might improve.
  • To understand the differences in assertive, aggressive, and nonassertive behavior patterns, voice characteristics, and body language.
  • To understand the role self-esteem plays in being assertive.
  • To learn words, and other characteristics that exhibit assertive behavior.
  • To learn ways to develop an assertive image.
  • To learn what some of your individual rights are.
