Recruiting and Hiring Temporary Employees
Departments needing temporary help should call the Temporary Service Office at 205.934.4030. A complete description of the job including credentials needed and the approximate time frame of the assignment should be given. It is not necessary to complete a Position Request Form to fill a temporary position. Specific temporary positions are generally not posted or advertised.
Departments assigned temporary employees are charged the employee’s base salary plus 12.0% to cover administrative costs. The department’s budget is automatically billed. No requisitions for payment are required.
Use of outside temporary employment agencies is discouraged. The University may be held liable for the conduct of outside agencies, plus, private agencies are much more expensive to utilize. Private agencies should be used only after it is determined that no qualified individual is available through the UAB Temporary Service. For more detailed information regarding the use of temporary service contact the UAB Temporary Service Office at 934-4030.
Termination and/or End of Assignment
Temporary Service employees may be assigned part-time or full-time to any one department for any required period of time, usually not to exceed 120 business days. Should the department need to retain the employee longer than the 120 days maximum, extension may be granted.
Temporary job assignments may be terminated at any time. The department should contact the Temporary Service Office and inform them of the effective date/time and reason for termination of the assignment.
Re-employment
Temporary Service employees may apply and be considered for regular employment status within the University. Temporary Service employees who are currently assigned to a department may be considered internal candidates for regular employment.
