STAR Certificate Replaced with The Supervision Series

Beginning in May, Professional Development's STAR Certificate program will be phased out and replaced with The Supervision Certificate Program. Alyce Hartley, Manager of Professional Development said, "this is a unique certificate for rising or aspiring supervisors."

The Supervision Series Certificate Program can be taken prior to entertain a management role, so those employees at UAB who wish to become managers can prepare themselves for obtaining those jobs. "This program is separate from Management Essentials," said Hartley, "which is for people already in that role."

The Supervision Series Certificate Program is composed of the following classes:

  • Conducting Meetings that Matter
  • The Conflict Competent Leader
  • Delegating: A Leader’s Guide to Letting Go
  • Leading Change - For Managers
  • New Supervisor: Going From Peer To Boss
  • Managing the Multi-Generational Workforce
  • Performance Management – Helping People Win at Work
  • Principles of Ethical Decision Making
  • The Servant Leader
  • Whale Done! The Power of Positive Relationships

If you have been working toward the STAR Certificate, your training history will be grandfathered into the new Supervision Series Certificate. If you have taken any of the series classes and now wish to earn the new certificate, your training history will count toward certification and you will not need to repeat classes.

Training & Development will, over the summer, continue to revise their certificate offerings. Look for more information here and at our website. To register for any of these classes, please visit the UAB Faculty and Staff Learning System.

How to Create a Watermark in Microsoft Excel

Most Microsoft Office users have either seen or used a watermark in a Word document to alert the readers that the item is a draft copy or confidential. Unfortunately, Excel does not have a watermark feature. However, it is possible to use WordArt to create text that resembles a watermark. This WordArt will give you a watermark effect, but can only be used when the rest of the work editing data on a spreadsheet is complete. Once in place, the worksheet can only be editing by moving the watermark, then replacing it when editing is done.

Sound like something that could benefit you? Follow these easy steps:

  • Click the Insert tab in Excel.
  • Click the WordArt button.
  • Select Gradient Fill – Gray, Outline – Gray.
  • Enter the text to be displayed as the watermark.
  • Select the text and change the text fill color to a lighter gray. Then change the text outline to no outline.
  • Click the Home tab and set the font to a larger size by clicking on the number in the size box and typing the size you want such as 150.
Create a watermark in Excel

  • Right click on the WordArt text and select Format Text Effects.

  • Click Text Fill on the left.
  • Click and drag the transparency arrow to 50%. (You can adjust this percentage to meet your needs).
  • To rotate the text, click and drag the green circle at the top to reposition the text in the desired position.
  • Move the WordArt to the desired location on the Excel worksheet.

Start New Employees Well with Onboarding

If you've ever tried to show a new employee or coworker the ropes around the office, you know how tricky the task can be. There are so many little things to explain about how a department functions. If you're a manager, you know that getting an employee started on the right foot is essential to a great career. That's why "onboarding," or welcoming a new employee with a systematic process for learning a new job, is so essential.

An outgrowth of T&D's very popular Management Essentials class, Onboarding: Mapping Employee Success is a class for managers and supervisors to learn recommended steps toward creating a customized task-training system. It introduces the rudiments of performance management, which enables both managers and employees to have the best possible relationship.

Onboarding: Mapping Employee Success will be held on May 21 at 8:30 a.m. Space is limited. Register now!

We will do our best to answer all your questions every month.

Q: My office just got converted to Office 2010. I'm okay on Word and Excel and stuff, but I do a lot of work in Publisher. That ribbon doesn't seem to correspond to the other ribbons. And frankly, I really miss the Object bar for all the most common Publisher tasks. How can I use the Ribbon like I did the Object toolbar? Help!

A: Publisher was the odd-duck when it came to Office 2007, so you are just fine to be surprised by the late transition to the Ribbon interface. Most of the tools you were used to finding in the Objects toolbar are now located on the Home tab of the Ribbon in the Objects group. Those that aren't, for instance, a picture placeholder, can be located on the Insert tab of the Ribbon in the Illustrations and Building Blocks groups respectively.

The Home tab, Objects group:

It's tough-- we know. You'll make the transition. Never hesitate to contact us for help answering your questions.
